What I'm Wearing: Comfortable Traveling

I've been awake for about 24 hours straight now, but I'm glad to be all unpacked and settled. People never know what to wear while traveling. Depending on where you're off to, you can be stuck on a plane for quite some time so comfort is definitely key. My flight this morning was about 7 hours, long but bearable.

I wore a pink washed out tee with grey jeans paired with a pair of Lela Rose for Payless flats. If you want to wear jeans on a flight make sure they're a pair that have a good amount of spandex in them so they're still comfortable. I packed a cute trimmed cardigan in my carry-on and I was glad I did...it was freezing on the plane!

The view this morning from from my window seat on the plane. Isn't it stunning?

Traveling Essentials: Passport Holder

I'm going abroad at the end of this week. Traveling to Portugal to be exact, and for spring semester I will be studying in Denmark. Because of all this impending travel, I'll be making a series of posts dedicated to traveling needs. As I'm going through my checklist, I realized I should really get a passport holder. I don't want my ticket in one folder and my passport in a random pocket. While I was shopping in the Marc by Marc Jacobs store on Bleecker St. yesterday, I saw a python envelope clutch. When I opened it, I realized it could double as my much-needed passport holder. With all of its compartments, it's perfect especially at only $19.

Internships and College: Teen Vogue Handbook

Some of us have known fashion was their livelihood since the could play dress up in their mothers' closets. Others, such as myself slowly discovered the industry and become enthralled by it daily. Those of us with the slow start may soon have some much needed help on how to break into this competative industry. Teen Vogue is set to release its "Insider's Guide to Careers in Fashion" in October. The book will include career advice, tips, and interviews with big industry names such as Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfield, and Patrick Demarchelier.

You can watch what Amy Astley (Teen Vogue's Editor-in-Chief) has to say about the handbook here:

"Do your homework, go online, visit every museum, and intern. You just need to have a love for what you're doing. It's not about thinking that it's the cool thing; it's about really believing in it."
-Anna Wintour

What do you think about the Teen Vogue Handbook? Are you going to purchase it?

Reviews and News: Nordstrom Rack Coming to New York City

While I sincerely miss Virgin Megastore in Union Square, the fact that a Nordstrom Rack will be soon replacing it, definitely soothes the pain. I've scored some great deals at other Nordstrom Racks before including BCBG pants for $6.00. So, the fact that one is opening in my backyard (I love Union...close and convenient) is thrilling. I just hope New Yorkers learn to take a step back when doing their shopping in the Rack and not be too aggressive. Sharing is caring, afterall.

Reviews and News: Forever 21 Twist

Forever 21 recently announced they were in the works of launching a home and beauty line, and today unveiled yet another collection named "Twist." The line will feature limited edition pieces all following a distinct theme. The first theme is perhaps a bit Britney inspired. It's called "Cirque 21" and is of course, circus-themed. Here are some looks they unveiled today.

While I love Forever 21's affordable fashion, I must admit I'm starting to get a tad confused by all these "[Insert Name Here] 21" lines...

What do you think of these looks from Forever 21's new line?

Internships and College: Design Your Dorm

Design Your Dorm is a relatively new website that brings a whole new dimension to dorm decorating. I wish this website was up and running when I was an incoming college freshman spending my days on The Container Store website thinking of decorating ideas. The website allows you to create a 3-D model of your dorm. For those of you attending big schools, they have exact dorm replicas which is great. The website also allows to choose from a generic room type. The service provides a great way for you and I to see what will fit in our tiny dorms and what won't. While the idea is great, I think it still needs a lot of work. As you can see above, I began putting up posters (I have the colorful Martini Glass Poster in my dining room!) but was unable to place any comforter or move around some of the furniture. It needs to be more flexible. I wish I could remove the wardrobes (we have built-in closets) and move the window. I think the idea is genius, and I recommend checking it out, but some of the details need to be worked out.

Be sure to check out their Moving Day Checklist!

What do you think of Design Your Dorm? Does it make planning for Move-In Day easier?

Sales and Deals: Steve Madden

I've been searching for new heels. I don't want regular pumps (though you can't ever go wrong with black pointed toe pumps). I was in Macy's today and was impressed with their Steve Madden collection. As usual, Steve Madden has great stylish but affordable shoes and sandals. While they do have quite a few expensive pieces, generally they're priced under $100.

I came across a code today for 30% AND free shipping!

I didn't find new fun heels, but I ended up with their Sicilly Gladiator Sandals for $18 shipped. If you're in need of new shoes, definitely visit their website at SteveMadden.com

Use the code: SPIN30 for 30% off and free shipping!

Gossip Girl Filming

So yesterday I heard that Gossip Girl would be filming right in my neighborhood and I wanted to wander there during my lunch. I heard it was insane...tons of fans and paparazzi and opted not to go. I had to walk by to go to the train to go into Brooklyn tonight and it looked empty. The trucks were there but no sign of any cast members or trailers. I figured they were done for the day. I'm walking home at midnight and spot a bright light at the end of a block. I walk down to check it out and see what I found.

Nate's mystery lady? It's none other than CW's Joanna Garcia. Garcia joins the cast this fall as Nate's love interest, Bree Buckley. That's a nice Ferrari Nate has there isn't it?

What I'm Wearing: Lunch in the Park

Went to lunch in Bryant Park today. It was so gorgeous out that I almost didn't want to go back to work. I wanted to wear a cute summer dress today and this paisley piece from Kensie did the trick. Paired with a light cardigan and sandals, it was laid back and perfect for today's 80 degree weather.

What to Wear: Fourth of July

Fourth of July is quickly coming up. The forecast is finally looking hot and sunny, and I'm excited. I have no idea what exactly I'm doing yet, but I'm sure it'll be a good time. If you have your plans set, but don't have an outfit picked out just yet, I've got some ideas.

Parade and Fireworks

At night, I'll be standing overlooking the Hudson watching the Macy's fireworks show. If you're in for some patriotic activies such as a parade or watching fireworks, casual is the way to go. Sometimes it's hard to find the balance between corny and cute, but this look is relaxed and patriotic without screaming "AMERICA" in your face.

Beach and Poolside Fun

If you're heading to the beach or a friend's pool, slip into your favorite swimsuit and pair it with these great bright blue denim shorts, a simple white tank, and some comfy Havaianas. The beaded necklace adds some color and fun without being too overbearing.

Summer Barbeque and Party

I love this AE Belted Party Dress. Its elegant style is refreshing and flattering on any figure. Keep it simple with minimal jewelry such as these scallop studs and bangles. The dress would be great with wedges but for a Fourth of July barbeque or relaxed party these sandals by Steve Madden have the right amount of detail to complete the look.

What do you think about these Fourth of July looks? What are your plans?

Reviews and News: Love 21

If you were to step in the Forever 21 in Herald Square you might ask, "what recession?" I stopped by after work to check out their new contemporary line, Love 21. It was unbelievably busy, especially for a Wednesday. I give immense credit to their sales associates for keeping the store running. Love 21 launched in May online and in select stores. I browsed online and really liked some of their pieces, but I'm always a little wary of ordering online and shipping costs. I prefer in-store purchases. So, today I made a long overdue trip to the Forever 21 in Herald Towers. Their selection was much smaller than I anticipated. I didn't recognize any of the pieces I had my eye on. I picked up a couple of things and failed to see a difference in quality. Love 21 claims to have a more sophisticated and modest fit. I can't give any feedback on that because I didn't try anything on. From what I could tell, Love 21 is very similar to Forever 21 except its pieces all have a feminine classic look. I did see some associates unpacking boxes across the floor. I'm hoping they've received a new shipment and with that, more Love 21.

Above are my favorites from this line. The one piece I really had set out to purchase today was the Embroidered Pleat Skirt. I love its detailed simplicity. That sounds contradictory because many times when clothing is detailed, it's hardly simple. You can't really see it in the small image, but it's design (as you know from its name) is all embroidered making it appear delicate. Depending on its length, it could have been work appropriate. The Floral Stroke Woven Skirt wasn't in-store either. I love its colors and paint stroke look. Although none of these pieces are new, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that they'll arrive in-store.

Embroidered Pleat Skirt Available at Forever 21 for $22.80

Floral Stroke Woven Skirt Available at Forever 21 for $22.80

Crochet Spotted Blouse Available at Forever 21 for $22.80

Chiffon Flower Print Top Available at Forever 21 for $19.80

What do you think of Love 21? What's your favorite piece from this new line?

The September Issue, a documentary by R.J. Cutler, surrounds fashion legend and Vogue editor, Anna Wintour. The film which caused buzz at this year's Sundance Film Festival by winning the Grand Jury Prize for Excellence in Cinematography premieres in U.S. theaters late this summer. The documentary follows Wintour and the process of putting together the September 2007 issue of Vogue, which reportedly weighed about 5lbs!

Reviews and News: Anna Sui for Target

Anna Sui reported her collaboration with Target months ago. Her Gossip Girl inspired collection was leaked online by New York Mag this past weekend. It's easy to associate each look with the characters, Blair, Serena, Jenny, and Vanessa. The Blair-inspired looks have a romantic feel, filled with bows and other girly details. I feel as though the pieces associated with Serena are a bit farfetched. You can see the inspiration but I think it's a little weak. I love Serena's style on the show so I guess I was a bit disappointed. Vanessa's pieces are very obvious. They all look bohemian and very appropriate for fall, especially considering the colors. The looks inspired by Jenny are all different from each other. I feel like that's because we've seen Jenny's style evolve drastically in the past two seasons. However, I can definitely see Jenny wearing the dress above.

See other pieces from the collection here: The Cut

The collection will be available starting September 13 in 250 stores and online.

What do you think about Anna Sui's collection? Will you be purchasing any of these pieces?

Reviews and News: MBMJ Print Locket Pocket Big Tote

While browsing Shopbop's sales, I came across this Marc by Marc Jacobs tote. I love big bags. I feel like they're so much more functional because everything fits. What's especially great about this tote is that it becomes compact similar to the Longchamp Le Pliage bags. I always bring them (the Longchamp bags) when I travel because they don't take up any room in my suitcase. I like this pattern; it's great for the summer. At first, I didn't know how versatile it would be or how to match in with my wardrobe, but after a second thought I realized it'd be extremely easy because of how many colors are present in its striped pattern. I came to the conclusion that my only reservation about the bag is its fabric. Canvas can often be really hard to clean, but nothing a little elbow grease can't remove, assuming the bag is gently loved.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs Print Locket Pocket Big Tote is available at Shopbop on sale for $117.60

Verdict? What do you think about this MBMJ Tote?

Sales and Deals: Free Pinkberry!

While this may not be fashion related, I needed to share. This Friday, June 26 from 5-9PM Pinkberry is giving out a free small yogurt in one of their new flavors: coconut, passionfruit, or tropical swirl. I'll be sure to grab one after work. Personally, passionfruit what they describe as tangy + tropical will be my flavor of choice. What a great start to the weekend. Enjoy!

Trendy Television: The Hills

While I may not be first in line to purchase Lauren Conrad's new book, L.A. Candy, I must admit I love her polished look. Lauren donned this outfit at her New York City book signing. At first glance, I would probably look over this shirt. Come to think about it, I probably have considering it's available at Urban Outfitters. It looks shapeless, and I would assume it to be unflattering. Tucked in, the shirt is pulled closer to the body creating a slimming effect. It's ready for everyday use as well as in the office with a great pencil skirt or slacks. The shorts, while not as office friendly, are great for a weekend night out with friends especially now that it's summer. Get Lauren's look below.

Sales and Deals: Rebecca Minkoff Online Sample Sale

Sick of missing out on sample sales? This Rebecca Minkoff sample sale is available to everyone because it's online. If you haven't heard of Rebecca Minkoff, her bags are classic and great quality. The leather is buttery soft. Her most popular bag (I would say) is the Morning After Bag on sale for $350 from $595, but as a bag fan of hobo bags, I love the Nikki. Its also available for the same price in an assorment of colors.

The sale goes on until this Sunday, June 21 so grab one while you can.

Sales and Deals: Jimmy Choo Teams Up With H&M

Forget Target and Payless, Jimmy Choo has confirmed a collaboration with H&M. The collection will include bags and of course, shoes. I remember the first time I heard of Jimmy Choo shoes, where else but on Sex and the City. Of all the designers to cash in from the dwindling recession by partnering with large retailers, Jimmy Choo is definitely the collection I'm the most excited to see (and own)! Other designers including Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli have previously partnered with H&M. The image above includes two designs from the line. Personally, I love the black heels.

Tamara Mellon, President and Founder of Jimmy Choo describes the line as "a sophisticated, fashion forward, accessible and glamorous collection - the perfect party pieces to buy now and then wear out that night!" The line will be sold in about 200 stores worldwide. Jimmy Choo prices range from about $700 to sometimes over $1,000. H&M has some reasonably priced products with collaborative pieces generally being a bit more expensive. Jennifer Uglialoro, an H&M spokeswoman has stated that "most of the footwear will range from $99 to $129 for boots, though there are over-the knee boots priced at $299. Shoppers can also find ballet flats for $59.95. Handbags will be priced from $59.95 to $299."

The collection will be available in stores on November 14, 2009.

Are you excited for Jimmy Choo's line for H&M?

Trendy Television: Gossip Girls

Gossip Girl is on a break, but that doesn't mean we can't admire their actresses' style from afar. Last night were the CFDA Fashion Awards, and both Blake Lively (Serena) and Michelle Trachtenberg (Georgina) were present. Each actress wore completely different ensembles, risky and unique in their own way. If you want to emulate these looks but don't have the means, look below for some alternate yet similar choices.

I really like the hot pink with the nude peep toe pumps, but I can't decide if the whole look together on Blake Lively is too reminiscent of Barbie. I love her, and normally she looks flawless. Maybe it's just the tan that's throwing me off, because this Michael Kors dress fits her perfectly.

Strapless Sheath Dress in Hot Pink Available at Forever 21 for $14.50

Michelle Trachtenberg opted for a more risque outfit in her Behnaz Sarafpour dress. Her sleek pulled back hair completes her look. At first glace, I didn't like it. The ruffles on the bustier weren't flattering, but as I looked at other images, I decided she looks great for the event. Afterall, it's an awards show for fashion. She dared to be a little different, and I applaud her for that.

Reviews and News: Payless on the Runway

When I first saw alice + olivia shoes in a window while walking past a Payless, I nearly did a double take. Someone else finally caught onto to the "Designer for Less" concept. In this recession, shoppers really can't afford to spend the extra $100. At first, I wasn't too impressed with the designs or the quality. Both seemed lacking. A couple of weeks ago when looking for some last minute sandals, I browsed through a Payless to find Lela Rose flats on sale for $10.00. I'm pleasantly surprised to report that I haven't had any major problems with them yet. As with nearly all my shoes, of course they caused a bit of pain the first couple of times.

This inspired me to take a look at their designer collection for Fall '09. I've been long awaiting to see what Christian Siriano would design for his Payless line. It was...mediocre. None of his designs particularly excite me. The Payless on the Runway collection as a whole, however, did. Full of earthy tones, boots, and heels, this collection impressed me far more than their Spring '09. My only reservation? The quality. A lot of these shoes look like faux suede or faux leather which would cause them to ruin quickly. That seems to be the biggest problem with these designer-major retailer parternerships. Can't they find a happy medium? Decent price and decent quality? Let's hope so.....

Mission Accomplished....

On Tuesday, I discussed a scavenger hunt Rachel Nasvik has going on based in the city. I was so close to getting one, yet the chance seemed to slip away. I decided that finding one of these bags would be one of my goals this summer. Yesterday, while working on a blog post (it's coming soon) I recieved a tweet that read "Five Alices are on Canal at Broadway. Look for the old man with a cast on his arm. http://yfrog.com/5949914523j" I literally bolted out my door. I'm sure everyone doing their Saturday shopping in SoHo thought I was insane as I ran to Canal Street. I wandered around looking for this old man and even proceeded to ask another vendor if he knew another old vendor who had broken his arm. I was seriously committed to finding a bag! Finally, out of the corner of my eye I see an old man standing near his cart of bags. I quickly grabbed one at the same time as two other women snatched the last two. I've been so excited, I've carried it around everywhere (just like a little kid) the past two days!

What I'm Wearing: Rain Rain..Go Away

It's been raining nonstop this week, but that's no reason to stay dark and gloomy. I thought I'd be attending an event tonight Uptown, but it was cancelled due to the rain. That meant that I could finally spend some time with friends. So, I ran home from work and changed to do some wandering in the city rain. I stuck to neutrals with just a a bright pop of color with my shirt. It is summer after all!

Internships and College: Dorm Decorating 101

[Image Courtesy of The Container Store]

The best part of about moving into your own place, whether it be your dorm or a new apartment, is being able to express yourself in a whole new way. Living at home sometimes makes it hard to fully decorate according to your tastes and style. I know my room is cluttered with things from my childhood. So, a chance to start fresh and explore decorating ideas can definitely be exciting!

Choose a Color Scheme or Theme
By choosing a color scheme, I don't mean to make everything in your room blue. Many times, especially dorms have white walls that you aren't allowed to paint. Use this as an opportunity to play with different bright colors in your bedspread, posters, and even your desk. The room in the image above isn't too matchy, but there certainly is an underlying fresh yellow young theme.

Be Conscious of Space
Conserve! Put up shelves and use boxes. You don't have to buy boring clear plastic storage boxes in every single size for everything. I do recommend purchasing big sturdy boxes for under your bed, but for around your room use canvas boxes or baskets in different patterns, prints, and colors.

Decorate Walls
Make use of all the blank space. Put up mirrors, posters, or pictures. Want to be a little different? Invest in a mural or some wall art/stickers. I've even seen people hang up huge tapestries on their walls or from their ceilings. This is your time to be creative, so try something new.

Invest in Extra Lighting
This past year, my bedroom had one lamp (mind you, my school has great dorms, so be prepared). There are great ways to light up a room. Check out garage sales for some great vintage lamps and light stands. A lot of students I know like to use Christmas lights all around the edges of their room as a fun way to brighten up their space.

Organize
Everything. I'm not the most organized person (on the weekends it can get a little out of hand), but for the most part I like keeping things pretty structured. If you need to make room in your closet, purchase a shoe rack or closet organizer to place inside.

Check back throughout the summer for some more ideas, links, and sales!

Sales and Deals: Rachel Nasvik Bags

Rachel Nasvik designs great handbags, but I haven't been able to get my hands on one (yet!). As a marketing major, I found what the designer is currently doing absolutely thrilling. She has 96 limited edition hand-printed bags that are currently being placed all around the city (different amount daily). She tweets about the bag's location and if you find it, it's yours! Today, I ran out of work to go to a hair salon where a bag was supposedly placed. I'm running in heels asking 411 to connect me to Cutler (the salon). I finally get through only to discover someone took the bag. So close...yet so far. The woman who I talked with was awfully sweet and thought it was funny that I actually called in. So, I'm on a mission to get one of these bags!

Are you a fan of Rachel Nasvik? Are you in on this hunt?

Summer Trend: Maxi Dresses

Long maxi dresses seem to be back this summer.  I see them everywhere in the city, but I can't seem to make up my mind about them.  My favorite part about summer is being able to stay cool in light dresses and skirts.  It appears that maxi dresses kind of counteract that idea in being so long.  Many appear to be made of a thick cotton material, so it's hard for me to imagine how actually light they are.  In my search for a possible dress, here are some of my finds:

Reviews and News: ShopStyle

ShopStyle is probably one of the most useful websites for any avid shopper, especially when you're looking for a particular item. For anyone who has never heard of ShopStyle, it is almost like a shopping search engine. You can search for a product by name or designer, or you can browse the categories. I love all of the options Shopstyle presents; you're capable of refining your search by brand, store, sale, price, and color. Best of all, they just recently released an iPhone/iPod Touch app. While I think the app still needs some work (they don't give you as many options), it's still worth a download, especially because it's free! So, no matter if you're looking for a new pair of ballet flats or want a grey and white striped one-shouldered top under $50.00, ShopStyle will make your search easy. Be sure to check it out?
