Sales and Deals: Carlos Falchi is Coming to Target

Target has partnered with yet another designer.  This time it's Carlos Falchi.  True to his normal line, his Target line will consist of faux snakeskin bags and will be available come the fall. According to WWD, "As Target’s eighth limited edition affordable handbag launch, Falchi’s designs will be available at the retailer’s stores and on target.com from Oct. 11 to Dec. 27. The 13-item line will consist of faux snakeskin handbags in jewel tones such as plum and teal with contrasting shades of brown, black and gray." I'm excited to see what the line will look like. I like snakeskin in moderation. So, a small clutch would be ideal for me. My only reservation is that like with other target lines, the faux leather sometimes looks a little...lacking? Meanwhile, I'll keep my hopes up.

Not familiar with Carlos Falchi? See some of his handbags at Saks Fifth Avenue like this Pleated Pouch Clutch:

Reviews and News: Redtagcrazy.com

If you haven't heard any buzz about this site, you definitely will. It's one of those things that you'll consider amazingly horrible. Amazing because it offers discounts of 50-80% on designer clothing and horrible because it's so addictive...so there goes your paycheck.

How it works:

It's basically a race against time. They only have a certain number of items per product available in certain sizes and colors. So, you have to click fast enough to ensure you can purchase it. There's always a new item every hour. A neat feature is what they call "chick chat" where you can live chat with other customers who are on the site. Redtagcrazy also gives you the option to sign up for alerts. These alerts can go to your e-mail, phone, AIM, internet browser, just about anywhere. This way, you know when there's a new sale going on. E-mail alerts are special in that they give you a sneak peek of the upcoming sale. Think of it as a tease! They also have an iPhone/iPod Touch app in the works that I'm really excited about.

There current sale is a linQ Wrap Back Long Sleeve Tunic. It comes in black or red and is marked down to $22.22 from $78.

What to Wear: Summer Wedding

This Sunday, I'll be heading north to go to a wedding.  It's wedding season, and I know how hard it can be to find something to wear. I've found a few dresses that I hope can suit whatever type of wedding you attend this summer, day or night, church, garden, or beach.

Bold and Bright

The Maggy London Strapless Bead Bodice Dress (shown left) can be very flattering due to its fitting.  The shutter-pleating creates a great effect and the floral pattern is perfect for summer. The Satin Swept Pleat Dress (shown middle) has a v-neckline for a sexy look without being too revealing. My favorite part is the front pleats that nearly twist at the center. The pulling inward makes your waist appear even smaller for an hour glass shape. The Adrianna Papell Printed Pleat Matte Jersey Dress  (shown right) stood out to me because of its stunning color. The detailed beading and chiffon material makes this a gorgeous summer wedding dress.

Maggy London Strapless Bead Bodice Dress Available at Nordstrom for $66.90

Nice and Neutral

Simple and elegant, the Pleated Silky Dress (shown left) creates a nice silouhette because of its cuts, neckline, and pleats. The Strapless Party Dress (shown middle) has a full skirt keeping it fun for summer. The flower belt doesn't come with the dress, but I've included it in the picture to show you can dress up this or any other dress to your own style.  Many people used to believe black isn't appropriate for a wedding, but it has become more accepted. I say, dare to be different, especially if it's an evening wedding and wear the Strapless Drape Sheen Tunic (shown right).

What would you wear to a summer wedding?

Trendy Television: The Hills

I'll confess, I still watch The Hills if I'm home, but I've never seen its after show ( just because I think the idea is ridiculous).  Last night, it was nearly midnight when I was flipping through the channels when I saw it was on. I couldn't help but watch to catch a glimpse of what Lauren was wearing.  How her style has developed since her Laguna days!

These pieces were the most similar items I found.  The best part is that four out of the five items were on sale, and they're all reasonably priced! I'm not very big on leather, but I think this outfit was pulled off effortlessly.  The soft billowy top contrasted nicely against the rough leather skirt.  The scarf was a nice accessory to throw on.  Finally, the black heels kept it simple and pulled it together, while the teal nail polish gave it just a pop of color.

Mossimo Sheer Cowl Top in True White Available (on sale) at Target for $8.98

Sales and Deals: botkier Sale

I was doing some online browsing when I came across the Sale section of botkier's website.  They have some amazing markdowns, and I had to share! I love botkier bags. Their leather is always so amazingly soft.  So definitely grab one of these if you can.

If I could take advantage of this awesome deal, I'd get the morgan small hobo. At $137 (down from $550), it's 75% off!

Which bag is your favorite?

Summer Trends: Full Skirts

We've all seen them. Some of us hate them and some are utterly obsessed with them. Personally, I don't own any, just yet! I think the key to full skirts is that they should be the center of your outfit. I love them with just a tee or tank tucked in and a great belt. Simplicity. Jason Wu and Michael Kors were among the designers to include full skirts in their Spring 2009 RTW collections.

[Courtesy of Style.com]

Keep this trend a la Jason Wu with solid colors in the following two picks.
How cute is this skirt? The Matter & Motion Skirt from Anthropologie is flirty but work appropriate. Something you can probably wear to your summer internship or job, at the very least on Casual Friday. Best part? It's on sale for $39.95!

Available at Anthropologie for $39.95

This BDG Pleated Knit Pull On Skirt from Urban Outfitters is available in four different colors. So pick one that suits you and dress it up for a Saturday night or down for a summer lunch.

Available at Urban Outfitters for $38.00

If you prefer bold prints, these next choices may be for you.

I love Urban Outfitter's Kimchi Blue Printed High-Waisted Skirt. If you want to have a print but keep it versatile choose this skirt in the Potato Woodblocks color (shown). The print manages to be sophisticated and bold at the same time, for a classy and trendy look.

Available at Urban Outfitter's for $58.00

These skirts from Forever 21 are perfect for summer. Their length and light airy material makes them great for those hot days. For under $15 a piece, you can get them both!

Shawna Cotton Skirt Available in Cream/Mustard at Forever 21 for $12.80

Eva Abstract Print Skirt Available in Navy/Purple at Forever 21 for $14.80

How do you feel about Full Skirts? Are they a Hit or Miss for you?

What I'm Wearing

I've seen features like this around the internet, and I think it's really fun to see what other people wear. Today, I attended a Memorial Day barbecue (even though it's not Memorial Day quite yet). Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer for me so I wanted to be fun and bright! I couldn't find exact matches online to what I was wearing so I'll post similar ones. In the future, I'll get some pictures of myself wearing it too.

Sales and Deals/Summer Trends: Victoria's Secret's Swimsuits

Today’s weather had me wishing I was at the beach. New York City’s high temperature was 88 degrees. As a big fan of summer and warmth, I was thrilled. Naturally, my thoughts were filled of beaches and swimsuits. I’m in dire need of a new swimsuit and luckily, Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual Sale is going on (strictly online for now). Below, I’ve listed my favorites from this year’s collection. I’ve tried to include a variety of swimsuits so everyone can find their perfect swimsuit!I love the twist feature on this swimsuit. In addition to the push-up padding, the twist detail on the top creates an enhanced bust. It also comes with a removable halter string if you’re not comfortable with a tube top.

Available at Victoria’s Secret here.

This two-piece comes with an underwire top and a skirted bottom. The underwire provides ultimate support while its ruched detail makes it flirty and fun. Its matching bottom comes as a skirt in case you want a little more coverage over your backside or legs.

Available at Victoria’s Secret here.

Tankinis are super flattering around the tummy. The detail on the neckline and around the bottoms provides a subtle edge that makes this bathing suit stand out amongst others on the beach.

Available at Victoria’s Secret here.

If one-pieces are for you, this Magicsuit is made of figure-shaping fabrics to create an instantly slimmer you! The deep plunge provides just enough of a reveal, while its ruched detail makes it cuter than the typical one-piece.

Available at Victoria’s Secret here.

My favorite part of this swimsuit is the bottom’s ties. The double-string bottom offers the ultimate protection. I really like the white-to-color fade in, and its halter top provides great support for a full bust.

Available at Victoria’s Secret here.

What kind of swimsuit is your favorite?

Internships and College: Resume Writing Tips

So you’ve found a job or internship that you really want to apply for, but need to write or update your resume. Don’t know where to begin? Start by searching for a template for Microsoft Word or sample resumes online. This way you can get a general idea what they should look like and start compiling the information you’ll need.

My Tips:

Make sure your resume looks and sounds professional. Stay simple in appearance. When it comes to resumes, less is more. As clever and different as Elle Wood’s resume seems, a pink fragranced resume may not be the best choice.

Try using detailed words and titles, and be clear in what you’re trying to say. This is your 15 seconds to shine. Make sure your resume effectively represents you and what you’d want your employer to know. Explain all of your skills and knowledge in a sophisticated, yet straightforward manner.

Use headings, bullets, bold/italics, and structure to your advantage. Break down your resume for readability. This also allows you to present your information in a way in which your important skills stand out.

Don’t lie or exaggerate. Don’t write “Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite” if you have no idea how to work with Microsoft Access. During an interview, I was asked how comfortable I was with Excel, and I replied that I was very comfortable and proficient in it. My interviewer proceeded to ask me if I could show him how to filter a database on Excel. Everything worked out well, but be mindful of what you’re writing.

Lastly, if you’re enrolled at a college or university, use their resources!! Take advantage of books at the library or the career center. Many schools offer one-on-one help and may even proofread your resume.

How’s your job search going this summer?

Sales and Deals: Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale

Oh, how I love the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale. They have a great selection that's easy to browse. They've even sectioned off "Designer Savings," a page dedicated to solely designer goods ranging from Alexander Wang to Zac Posen. With items marked down 33% and more, how can someone not find something they have to have.

My must-have is the Marc by Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Huge Hillier Hobo. From the first time I saw it, I wanted it. I love its slouchy look and how you can wear it a variety of ways. Its buttery soft leather is amazing. Now that it's a part of Nordstrom's Half-Yearly Sale, maybe I can finally have it!

Trendy Television: Gossip Girl

Yesterday's Gossip Girl season finale provided more drama and surprises than usual. The biggest surprise to me was the graduation attire. Typical Upper East Side high schools tend to opt out of graduation caps and gowns. Usually boys will wear tuxes and girls will graduate in white dresses. I think in the book this was kept true, but I'm not sure. I was a fan, however, of Serena's blue graduation gown. The color is amazing. I would've gone with a shorter dress, but then again I'm not Serena Van Der Woodsen and could never have pulled off a tassle in my hair.

Serena's actual dress is by Jay Godfrey and is available to anyone willing to spend $360 on this beauty.

Available for Pre-Order at Pink Mascara for $360.

If you want some other (lower cost) options for a gorgeous sapphire dress look below!

If a long dress is your calling, one of the three above options should suffice. My favorite has to be the JS Boutique Square Neck Stretch Satin Dress. The way it fits to the body creates a gorgeous silhouette.

Empire Dress Available at Spiegel for $49.00

Niki by Niki Livas Satin Gown Available at Dillards for $90.00

JS Boutique Square Neck Stretch Satin Dress Available at Nordstrom for $86.90

These fun dresses provide the same phenomenal bright blue color but at a shorter length. They're perfect for summer. The electric blue Mango dress has a great design, and Forever 21's price once again make the other two options extremely affordable.

Gleam Pleat Party Dress Available at Forever 21 for $24.80.

Electric Blue Dress Available at Mango for $79.90.

Banded Strap Knit Dress Available at Forever 21 for $17.80.

Internships and College: What Fashion Job Category is Best for You?

You like the clothes, read the magazines, and subscribe to blogs. You are a self-proclaimed fashionista, obsessed with all things fashion. If you’ve decided a career in fashion is your calling, but you don’t know exactly what you want to do, take a look at the following categories. See which fits your talents and dreams.

[Image Courtesy of All Arts Schools]

Designing

So, you think you want to be a designer? If you have vision and sketching is your thing, invest in a lot paper and pencils, and an education from schools such as FIT, Parsons, FIDM, and others. It’s a tough life for a designer. Breaking into the fashion world is difficult, let alone for an aspiring designer. If you truly believe in yourself and your work, stick to it.

Manufacturing

A career in manufacturing involves the process of turning the fabrics, trim, etc. in the finished product. Jobs in this category can involve choosing fabrics, sewing, or managing. A career in manufacturing can often be very hands-on. Basically, you’re responsible for turning an idea into reality.

Buying and Merchandising

As a buyer you’re often responsible for deciding what to purchase from a wholesaler so you can place it in stores. Sometimes it can involve predicting emerging trends and examining which items are selling (versus others). Merchandisers work with promotion. They have to figure out what looks best in-store to visually enhance promotion. Buyers and merchandisers may often work together to determine what to place and how to place it to increase sales.

Editorial

If you one day hope to read your writing in the pages of Vogue, Elle, Lucky, or another magazine, an editorial job is for you. Editorial jobs can also include editing responsibilities or graphic design. This is well suited for people with a creative eye.

Marketing/Public Relations

If you’re a social individual and don’t mind networking, a career in marketing or public relations might be for you. This career path involves branding, advertising, and generating publicity for a product, company, or fashion house.

Modeling

If you know how to strut your stuff, modeling may be in your future. You need to know how to work your body both in front of the camera and/or on the runway. Responsibilities include being a muse to your photographer and being absolutely fierce, hahaha.

Photography

A photographer knows how to use angles and lighting to enhance a photograph. If you think you have this vision, a career as a fashion photographer is for you. Build up a portfolio. Strive to be a little different but interesting, and maybe you’ll one day see your photos gracing the pages of magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar.

Have any questions about specific jobs in these categories? Comment or e-mail me, and I’ll try to help you out to the best of my ability!

What job category seems most appealing to you?

Summer Trends: Safari

Safari is back and a raging summer trend. This past spring, runway shows including the likes of Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren had a prominent safari theme. Keep this trend sweet and simple, or dare to be bold in loud prints. Below are some of my favorite simple choices.

Banana Republic
I love the Silk Safari Top paired with the Safari Pencil Skirt. It makes a perfect ensemble for this trend. The top’s bold print against the soft silk texture matched with the soft cotton pencil skirt creates an ideal summer outfit. I especially love the simple twist detail of the neckline.

Silk Safari Top Available at Banana Republic for $69.00

Safari Pencil Skirt Available at Banana Republic for $59.00

Forever 21

This Knit Safari Shirt is a simple take on this trend. I’d use this piece as a soft light cardigan for those summer nights over a simple tank or cami. Pair it with a great accessory and some jeans and you’re good to go.

Available at Forever 21 for $19.80

Kohl’s

The Sonoma Zebra Disc Drop Earrings are a perfect way to mix in this trend to just about any summer outfit. Its simple colors are perfect for the bold zebra print.

Available at Kohl’s for $8.08

Charlotte Russe
If you’re looking for updated flats, these Satin Giraffe Flats may be just the pair. It even comes in purple and light brown if you want to brighten up for summer.

Available at Charlotte Russe for $18.99

New York & Company

New York & Company currently has one of the largest collections of (as they call it) “Fierce Prints.” They offer everything from tops to belts to shoes following this safari theme. This City Style Python Print Scarf is one of their simple accessories. They also offer it in a fun turquoise color. Best of all, it’s on sale for $13.56.

Available at New York & Company for $13.56

Good Luck and Happy Shopping!

Sales and Deals: Sample Sales

One of my favorite things about living in NYC is the amazing sample sales that occur year round. I can’t count the times I’m away at school and think to myself, “NO, why do I have to miss this one!?!” Now, I’m home for the summer and ecstatic to go sample sale searching. Sample sales can be hard work. Many times you have to dig or even fight your way through them to get what you want.
These are my tips to have an efficient sample sale trip:

1. Map It Out: As a native New Yorker, I always swear I know where I am and where I’m going. Although it’s hard for me to admit, sometimes I don’t. If you take me out of my native SoHo, I might not know where exactly everything is (Hey! It’s a big city!). Don’t hesitate to use Google Map or ask someone on the street for directions. Time is money, and those extra five minutes might’ve cost you your coveted Botkier marked down 60%.

2. Plan Your Time: Try going to sample sales at off hours. Early in the morning or early afternoon would probably work best. Avoid rush hours such as lunch breaks, after work, and weekends. Some sample sales will be packed and have a waiting time no matter what, so be prepared.

3. Bring Money: Some sample sales only accept cash. Be aware of payment options before you go, or even bring cash just in case. You never know, their credit card machine might decide to malfunction.

4. Investigate: Look at every little detail of your purchase. Sometimes items are missing parts or damaged. Be sure to examine your item, and then decide if it’s worth it.

5. Enjoy: Sample sales can be a lot of fun, especially when you score a great deal!

I’ll try to post NYC Sample Sale Listings as I find them. So all of you can enjoy them as well! Check back tomorrow for my first batch!

Ever had a sample sale experience? Tell me about it!

Sales and Deals: Urban Outfitters Jewelry Stands

I’ve been home from school for about a week now, and I have finally gotten around to rummaging through my jewelry. I sorted it all out, untangled, tossed old pairs, etc. While I love my wooden jewelry box, I decided it really isn’t working for me anymore. I can’t really look at my accessories, because they’re all so mixed together. I can barely make out a pair of earrings, even with the in-box divisions. So, I was trying to think of a fun way to store my jewelry on my dresser without having a cluttered mess. In my search I came across Urban Outfitter’s jewelry stands. A bunch of them are on sale, and I figured I’d share. These stands alone are so stylish to have on a dresser. Better yet, I can now hang my jewelry somewhere where I can clearly see and choose.
My favorite is the Silhouette Tree Jewelry Stand. It’s on sale, marked down to $14.99 (from $28.00). It’ll work well with my room scheme (both at home and in my dorm). It has tons of branches which allow me to hang all of my bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. My small studs, which can’t be hung, can be conveniently tossed into the stand. I’ll definitely be investing in one of these!

For more jewelry stands at Urban Outfitters, click here.

Use Coupon: WELCOME6109 for 10% off. Valid until 6/1/09

Reviews and News: Topshop NYC

As a native New Yorker who is away most of the year for school, I was bummed to not be here for the Topshop grand opening in April. Today, I (FINALLY) had the awesome opportunity to check it out with some old friends.

First-off, I adored the set-up. Everything was so bright and modern. It was aesthetically pleasing to say the least. My favorite part of the store was definitely the Shoe Lounge. The area makes trying on shoes (something I usually hate to do) an enjoyable experience. I was browsing Kate Moss’ line when I saw the Broderie Anglais Sundress. This was probably one of my favorite pieces. I love summer dresses, and the eyelet design of this dress makes it light and sweet.

The Broderie Anglais Sundress is available online for $100.00.

Many shoppers who have gone to Topshop have claimed it to be the “expensive Forever21 or H&M.” As I looked around, I couldn’t help but think I’ve definitely seen this in Forever 21 for about $20 less. The one (major) difference is the customer service. There are an abundance of sales associates waiting to help out, but not in an overly obnoxious way. The store is kept clean and clear. You can easily find and pick out items. I can’t count the number of times I find a cute shirt in Forever 21 only to see it’s not in my size. Then when I ask a sales associate where I can find more, the reply is always, “Sorry, but I have no idea,” but at Forever 21’s prices, I can hardly complain.

When it comes down to it, it all depends on what kind of shopping experience you want to have. Topshop’s quality isn’t amazing, but the store makes up for it in other ways. You can even book an appointment with their Style Advisor if you’re in need of some help. I’ll probably stick to Forever 21 and H&M for now, but I’ll be sure to make some shopping trips to Topshop every now and again.

Not in New York? Check out www.topshop.com, $15 flat-rate shipping.

Trendy Television: Gossip Girl

Last night’s Gossip Girl set up a possible spin-off focusing on Serena’s mother, Lily. Besides the catfights, love triangles, and overwhelming drama, viewers like you and I tune in to see the amazing fashion. This flashback episode provided even more than the usual dose of great clothes and accessories. Brittany Snow looked great as the young and preppy Lily Rhodes.

As a college student (one eventually working as an unpaid intern) I know I certainly can’t afford Lily’s Gucci bag. Below you’ll see my similar, but inexpensive, matches to Lily’s outfit.

Skinny 77 Jeans Available at American Eagle for $49.50.

AE Favorite Striped Shirt Available at American Eagle for $29.95.

AE Skinny Bead Inlay Belt Available at American Eagle for $19.50.

Reviews and News: Eyes Lips Face Mineral Foundation

Buzz surrounding www.eyeslipsface.com has only continued to increase in recent months. I discovered the website last year, after hearing a radio advertisement. Can make-up at $1.00 really be just as good? When I first gave Eyes Lips Face (E.L.F.) a try, it only offered its basic $1.00 products. E.L.F.’s products ceaselessly amazed me. Its eyeshadow instantly brightened my eyes, and at $1.00, I couldn’t ask for more. And now, its mineral products have shown the same quality. The website has since expanded to include lotions, mineral products, and even a studio line.

I’m not extremely picky when it comes to make-up. Don’t get me wrong. It needs to do its job and do it well, but I’m not loyal to any brand or store. I like to mix and match. My make-up bag tends to include a range of products including MAC lip gloss, Cover Girl concealer, Sephora eyeliner, and new to my collection, E.L.F. Mineral Foundation.

The mineral foundation costs $5.00 and comes with a fair amount. I just finished the foundation I purchased in December, and I use it daily. E.L.F.’s foundation offers a variety of shades ranging from fair to deep to match a great amount of different skin tones. It’s been featured in Seventeen Magazine and Lifetime’s “How to Look Good Naked.” The biggest cons in customer reviews include “Doesn’t Stay On” and “Poor Coverage.” The most common complaint (with most mineral foundations) is that it doesn’t stay on all day. My tip: a primer. In my experience, by covering your face with a primer first, the mineral make-up sticks to the primer resulting in longer lasting coverage, but I think the real key to mineral make-up is in the application. Always apply mineral make-up with circular motions. I find that E.L.F.’s mineral foundation works just as well as other brands for me, but like with any make-up, it all depends on skin type and personal choices, but at E.L.F.’s unbeatable prices, I definitely recommend giving it a try!

Buy E.L.F.'s Mineral Foundation here.

Are any of you fans of mineral make-up or E.L.F. products? Comment and let me know!

Summer Trend: Fabulous Florals

Diane Von Furstenberg and Nanette Lepore are among the designers who have featured floral pieces in their recent runway collections. Bringing these amazing looks to everyday wear may not always be the simplest thing to do, but the next few pieces are some of my current floral favorites.

Urban Outfitters

The MINKPINK Floral Strapless Dress is fitted on top, creating a flattering look to the upper body. It tightens at the waist, accentuating it, and then proceeds to flare out. Its pattern is appealing and cute without being overbearing. The mix of colors makes it the perfect summer dress.
Available at Urban Outfitters for $88.00

I love the Urban Renewal Cotton Floral Skirt. The white flowers pop against its bright color. Paired with a simple white tank and cute sandals creates an everyday take on the floral trend.
Available at Urban Outfitters for $48.00

Forever 21

Forever 21’s Ruffle Front Floral Chiffon Top has a great color palette. Its soft watercolors blend with the ruffles creating a flirty summer top. The top can be easily dressed up or down and at $19.80, you couldn’t ask for a better deal!
Available at Forever 21 for $19.80

For anyone who wants take part in the floral trend without diving in headfirst, try a pair of the Rose Bouquet Earrings. The earrings are available in four different colors. If you want to be bright and bold (it is summer after all), buy a pair of the light blue or yellow earrings. Otherwise, try the pale pink or white to easily mix and match these earrings into your outfits.
